The Faculty of Medicine offers non-faculty appointments for individuals undergoing formal clinical and/or research training through Basic or Social Science departments at HMS, at HSDM, or clinical departments of Harvard-affiliated institutions.
Clinical fellow appointments are appropriate for interns, residents, and fellows in formal clinical training programs in Harvard-affiliated institutions. This appointment can be held only for the duration of formal clinical training (e.g., 3 years); the initial appointment request may be for the duration of the formal clinical training. Reappointments, where necessary, will be evaluated on an individual basis by the Office for Human Resources (for individuals based at HSDM) or by the Office for Faculty Affairs (for individuals based at affiliates).

A research fellow appointment is appropriate for an individual who holds a doctoral degree in an appropriate field and who is conducting mentored research with a faculty member as a postdoctoral fellow to develop their research ability and skill. The initial appointment request may be for a term of 1-2 years; reappointments will be evaluated on an individual basis by the Office for Human Resources (for Basic and Social Sciences departments) or the Office for Faculty Affairs (for individuals based at affiliates).
