15.4. Appointments at non-Harvard Academic Institutions

Harvard Medical School

Section 15 Table of Contents

  1. A ladder faculty member may not hold two academic appointments on the Faculty of another non-Harvard academic institution if the outside appointment is associated with voting rights, is an unmodified academic title, and/or is a ladder appointment (including Instructor). Additionally, one cannot have full-time academic appointments at two different institutions.
  2. Unusual situations may warrant an exception to the general policy outlined above. Accordingly, the Dean should have discretion to recommend to the Provost exceptions to the non-dual appointment policy, subject to such conditions as may be appropriate to the circumstances.
  3. Once a faculty member has indicated a commitment to accept a faculty position that will be associated with a voting and/or unmodified title at another academic institution, any promotion process that has started will be discontinued.
