13.2. Corresponding Member of the Faculty

Faculty who retire at the rank of Professor, Part-time, Associate Professor (Full- and Part-time), Assistant Professor (Full- and Part-time), or Instructor (Full- and Part-time), have completed at least ten (10) years of service to Harvard University, reached the age of 60, and will maintain some role in the academic department may transition to Corresponding Member of the Faculty status at the time of retirement, if requested by the Department Head. Corresponding Members of the Faculty hold active appointments that must be renewed annually and, to the extent that they and their Department Head’s wish, continue to participate in the academic life of the community except that they generally may not participate in promotion decisions or have primary responsibility for oversight of graduate students.

Process:

Step 1: Department Head requests transition to Corresponding Member of the Faculty status

Materials should be submitted electronically in one (1) PDF to the OFA at: facappt@hms.harvard.edu

  • eTAD requesting a change to Corresponding Member of the Faculty
  • Letter to the Dean including effective date through 6/30 of the following year, with an explanation of how the faculty member will continue to contribute to the Department and the continued affiliation with HMS/HSDM
Step 2: OFA reviews submitted materials
  • The OFA reviews and renders a decision regarding the proposed appointment
  • Appointment must be renewed annually
Step 3: Notification of approval
  • Department Administrator has access to reporting data to confirm approval of the appointment
