Professor of Clinical X (where X refers to the clinical department) is a professorial level, full-time only appointment available to Faculty of Medicine candidates who have served at the rank of Associate Professor, Full-time at HMS/HSDM for a minimum of five (5) years who have made contributions resulting in a national, and in many cases international, impact in and reputation for advancing the practice of medicine for which the candidate’s clinical expertise and excellence is expected to be integral. They must have a demonstrated record of clinical expertise, clinical excellence, and teaching excellence.
Eligibility for this title will ordinarily be limited to physicians and physician equivalents (e.g., MDs, DOs, DMDs, clinical psychologists, radiation or medical physicists), in keeping with the requirement for clinical expertise and excellence that aligns with our identity as professional schools of medicine and dental medicine, respectively, and are also instrumental to advancement of the practice of medicine.
Candidates for this title must have their primary faculty appointment in a department based at an HMS/HSDM affiliated institution or at HSDM. Faculty whose primary appointment is through a Quad-based HMS preclinical department are not eligible.
For HMS faculty and HSDM faculty with a primary appointment at an HMS affiliate, this appointment requires and is coterminous with an active appointment at an HMS affiliate such that if either the institutional affiliation with HMS or the appointment at the HMS affiliated institution is terminated, the Professor of Clinical X appointment will also terminate.
Privileges
As with other senior term appointments, Professors of Clinical X will be eligible to serve on senior committees, with the exception of the Subcommittee of Professors and ad-hoc committees charged with the evaluation of candidates for a faculty appointment with tenure. Professors of Clinical X may serve on professorial search committees up until the appointment phase for professorial-level finalists. Professors of Clinical X may also be proposed for endowed professorships and emeritus status, when they meet other eligibility requirements, and will be subject to standard processes for review and approval.
